After five sessions we were excited, this week, to join Amanda online in a scheduled Google Meet. Learners shared feedback and also had the opportunity to ask questions, hearing directly from Amanda about her experiences creating the weekday news podcast, Squiz Kids Today.

In this context it was important for Amanda to see the learners and hear what was being said in the room. All learners joined the Meet on their chromebooks and Amanda could see and hear learners as they spoke.

Being Cybersmart has empowered our young people to connect online, confidently making the transition to online learning over the past two years (see The Josh Smoothie a Technology lesson during lockdown 2020).

This week's opportunity was also about thinking beyond video conferencing as a tool only for learning in lockdown. From 2006-2008 I facilitated in a group of schools in central Auckland and realised quickly that email updates were not going to cut it if we going to harness the digital to share and collaborate.

As a cluster of schools we met regularly then for Cluster Shares, face-to-face opportunities designed for teachers to share their Teaching as Inquiry progress and to support digital fluency. We also quickly acknowledged the need for an online collaborative space that was visible and accessible publicly and would enable us to curate content that supported real time collaboration and rewindable learning for teachers... we even made the Ed Gazette!

This same thinking applied when I joined the Manaiakalani Cluster in 2012 with learners from Y5-13 shifting to 1:1 devices. Why is this important?

The last two years have highlighted how critical this has been for learning and effective practice in any context.

We know for learning to accelerate, our learners need to be able to access learning beyond a physical location and time (McNaughton 2018). This has meant new tools for learning and a new pedagogy to support learning outside of school.

In Term 1 this year we were challenged again with schools open and learners either onsite or learning from home. Listening to a podcast earlier this year, and the following from Derek Wenmoth resonated for me...

"All schools are now being challenged to consider - “What happens when we need to think about learners/teachers and the learning/teaching independent of the location/place? Listening to Manaiakalani Class OnAir teachers, Charlotte Gaston and Clarelle Carruthers yesterday, I was reminded of John Dewey's quote from our Create to Learn Staff meeting last year.

<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;">

Additionally the opportunities to collaborate and share, and how this is planned for and practiced, have been generously shared during this Tuhi Mai Tuhi Atu Meet and via the Class OnAir Site.

<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;">

Each episode includes an extended plan, lesson video, learning content, teacher reflection and learner generated content.

Thanks to Charlotte, Clarelle and all the teachers who have contributed to the site. Highly recommend taking some time out to explore using the new navigation links that have been added to the home page.... Thanks to Anne Sinclair and Matt Goodwin for curating.

All On Air Teachers' pages include links to their learners' blogs and I encourage everyone who visits to take some time to comment.

Yesterday's recording is available on demand including links to the Manaiakalani Class OnAir site.

Look out for further Meets later this term including Secondary and Te Reo Māori.

Significantly the extension has been developed by a New Orleans teacher for his school and generously shared. To see this extension continued to be refined over the past few weeks is greatly appreciated.
Last week an update to Google Meet Grid View included Enable Screen Capture Mode.

I recognise this as a smart feature. When active this presents your Meet Grid View at its best for capturing the screen. For example, if you are wanting a screen grab to share publicly.

Significantly this feature disables the names of all Meet participants. Why is this smart?

Consider the huge number of individual Meet Grid View screen grabs shared in both digital and print media in the past few weeks. Many of these screen grabs include groups of students with their full names on display, shared extensively on multiple platforms from Twitter to one of our our national newspapers!

When hosting a Google Meet, especially with large numbers, having names displayed during your Meet is very helpful and a must have feature.

However if you plan to take a screen grab (either still or video) for reuse, especially if your Meet participants are students, select Enable Screen Capture Mode first. Not only does this disable names it also forces the Grid View to best display for capture.

Whenever and wherever we share online it's personal, visible and amplified. It is personal because we are sharing information about ourselves. Creating a positive digital footprint means learning to make smart decisions about what personal information we share and what personal information we keep private. Manaiakalani Smart Footprint

A shout out to Angela Moala who posted this on her blog prior to Enable Screen Capture Mode being added to Meet Grid View. Awesome example of being Cybersmart... thank you Angela! angelamoala.blogspot.com - Distance Learning: Friday Spelling Test

Enable Screen Capture Mode activated - thank you Tamaki Primary whānau for demonstrating.
This is open to any of our learners with individual blogs regardless of whether they have registered for the Summer Learning Journey. The teaser activities are an opportunity for your learners to familiarise themselves with the SLJ activities.

Plus we have created a page on the Cybersmart site sharing ideas to help learners use what they have learnt to create a Digital Learning Object for their blog post. Please support your learners to create original content for their blog post rather than copying and pasting the SLJ activity content.

Each DLO includes a link to an example on a learner’s blog. Thank you to teachers and learners from Panmure Bridge School, Ruapotaka School, Glen Innes School and St Bernadette's School in Christchurch whose blogs we have referenced.

The Summer Learning Journey activities will be available to download to enable offline access. Take time during the Teaser Week to ensure your learners can confidently access and manage their learning both offline and online. See Google Drive Offline
Participating and contributing to annual Film Festivals is a highlight of the year in a number of our clusters. In addition to celebrating together on the day, all films are shared on our blogs. Viewing and responding to festival films is another opportunity for our young people to connect with an authentic audience.
Take some time to focus on the elements of a film to emphasise key vocabulary for commenting.

Engaging all learners in conversations about media and the construction of media enables valuable opportunities to understand why it is important to recognise who the creator is.
Identify opportunities to start this conversation with your learners early.
